Day 85 - 365 Days of Photography

3-26-2014

Sitting at the home of my God Parents this morning, on the veranda, just enjoying the surroundings and the quiet serenity that even city life can offer.   My God-father has planted several pigeon pea trees and they’ve grown to where the branches are taller than the fence.  He has made feeders out of chicken wire in which he places, bread and/or fruits to lure the birds.  Today there were an assortment of “Tanagers” – Blue, Gray and Green.  I also saw Yellow Orioles and several Kisskedees.  There is a gated fence separating his yard from his next door neighbor’s and they go back and forth between the yards, enjoying the spoils of each other’s gardens.  Good neighborly living.  The mangoes are green and high on the tree, before long they will ripen and fall.  They are a grafted mango, very big juicy and sweet.  My palette almost cannot wait for the absolute delight to come.

Of the Tanagers I saw, I present to you the "Palm Tanager".

Palm Tanager (Thraupis palmarum) is a medium-sized passerine bird, also referred to in Trinidad as the “Green Jean” and “Palmiste”.  In fact we have a suburb in San Fernando named after this bird.  Palm Tanagers are social, restless but unwary birds which eat a wide variety of small fruit.  They also regularly eat some nectar and insects, including caterpillars.
