Day 120 – 365 Days of Photography

4-30-2014

Bringing to you some of our older homes and show casing the architecture of former generations, they were definitely influenced by the settling of the Spaniards and at times even the French.  This was taken off of Sutton Street, San Fernando.

This is one of my captures that I labeled as “drive by shooting” as it’s taken with me driving and on the go.  Stopped briefly because I was in traffic, due to a stop sign and high volume of cars turning.

No amount of straightening can help either, all the posts are crooked.

Day 119 – 365 Days of Photography

4-29-2014

“Stay at the side of the pool.  Hang from your arms, keep your feet straight, bend your knees bringing your feet backward in a ninety degree angle, circle your legs making the biggest circle possible, bring them back together.  Keeping your feet flat allows your feet to become a paddle to push the water.  This kick is not to be done with speed like the flutter kick, no it’s a power kick, less is more, you have to remember to keep your feet under the water and make the biggest circle possible whilst keeping your feet flat, toes not pointed”.  Says the instructor, all the kids looking on in utter disdain, “do what with our feet?”, says the looks of puzzlement on all the children’s faces (my daughter in yellow hat, included).

Something so simple can sound so difficult when described without demonstration.

“You with the red hat (my son), demonstrate, no, no, not like that, make a big circle, you others pay attention!”

Day 118 – 365 Days of Photography

4-28-2014

What is island life without Coconut trees swaying in the breeze?  This one has banana on its side, mango behind and to the side.  It’s in good company.  Each tree standing alone, reaping vitality from the same soil, and air, bearing each it’s own fruit, different and unique, yet delicious.

Boom boom chaw, bo do bo doom chaw, boom boom chaw, Boom boom chaw, bo do bo doom chaw, boom boom chaw, Boom boom chaw, bo do bo doom chaw, boom boom chaw.  The rhythm can rock you!  Can you feel the beat?

My first shot was with my 50mm prime, but I ran out of room in the room to pan out, so I used my 18-55mm to get more.  I haven’t used this lens since I got the prime. J  Welcome back 18-55mm!

Both shots shown.

Got my son to pick this up and place it in the light box for me…….my 10x magnifier broke, so instead I am stacking 1x, 2x and 4x.    Focus on eyes!

It's tiny, smaller than my pinky finger, about the size of five grains of rice.

Day 114 – 365 Days of Photography

4-24-2014

We do believe it ends right here
The orchestration and the dream is clear
Shuttle departs and they're all there
Everyone's cracking up but we don't care
And we agree
It's what we need

Whisper the cymbals ride on in
Though this time we'll trade the strings for old 110
Headphones will assure position when
The crowd fades and the overture begins
And we agree
It's what we need

I don't believe the way this feels
Slight alterations leave enraptured ears
Headphones will insure possessions when
The crowd fades and the overture begins
And we agree
It's what we need

Day 113 – 365 Days of Photography

4-23-2014

Computer troubles!  Who has had them?  My “Personal Computer” (PC), I feel like its really personal, I want to call it my “Divorced Computer” (DC) has been acting up since before I left the US.  So much so that I wiped my hard drive, reinstalled windows and started over from scratch.  Well in so doing, tons of music and photos were unreachable for a while.  I’ve since toggled around with several laptops etc.  So then fast-forward, relocation and free time on hand, since I no longer have to drive in to a 9-5, I decided to finally fix this bad boy.  Yes “boy”, just because I am a girl hehe.  Anyhow, new hard drive, additional memory, computer working sweet; NOT!  Fail, the “DC” crashed again.  So troubleshooting time……..ah ha, this SATA cable and bay must be faulty.  I caught you on camera, now behave yourself.

p.s. New cable installed in slot 3, fingers crossed!

Every day I pop one of you and three of you.  Every day you help me see another day.  Maybe one day I won’t need you, but as of today I still do.  Fish Oil tablets and BP tablets, are my daily vice.

Day 111 – 365 Days of Photography

4-21-2014

I always think of the old adage that says “On the mountain top it’s glorious, but it’s in the valley I shall grow”.  As I look at the heavenly cloud formation and the light mist of morning dew rising from the hills, I am reminded that in the valley there is life, life of foliage, fauna, flora, animals and humans.  The lush green coverage from the top gives the impression of deep forestation, however, below there are homes, and natural habitat of many of our bird species and other animals.  This is part of our Northern range in the Arima valley.  It’s North Easterly direction also lends to many natural springs and the beginning of some of the nation's rivers.  I love these mountain views.  One day I’ll get a wide angle lens to be able to capture a better view of this vista.

Day 110 – 365 Days of Photography

4-20-2014

My son has been growing his hair, wanting an afro like the one my dearly departed brother sported back in the day when he was a teenager.  A friend of mine hooked me up with a barber that does house visits and my son was the happiest camper around with the results.  He came upstairs singing "I'm s--y and I know it".

Needless to say, he cannot wait to go back out to school to sport his do.

Day 109 – 364 Days of Photography

4-19-2014

What a promising day!  It started off with communication via facebook messenger from a class mate of mine; the conversation was cut short because she was prepping to come to San Fernando.  When I indicated that I lived in that city, she asked to meet for breakfast.  Always great seeing old friends, we sat and ate and laughed and reminisced.  Whilst there eating I got a phone call reminding me that I was supposed to be at the football (soccer) grounds for the shooting of a video for one of my young ladies in preparation for college.  At the field my daughter decided to monkey around with her brother’s cap and his head stocking.  He took it off earlier as he got hot fielding the balls for us.

This appears to be a pump of some sort, we first thought it was a water wheel, but looking at the plumbing and fixtures it looks more like a pump.  I thought a black and white rendition of this image would be nicer or should I say, more appropriate.

Day 106 – 365 Days of Photography

4-16-2014

This is the neighborhood pond at our local park.  Here love birds sit around the pond, often staring lovingly into each other eyes, puckering up their lips for the occasional meeting, hands entwined, legs locked, bodies naturally embraced.  I didn’t capture them, but instead I brought you natures love spot.

Day 105 – 365 Days of Photography

4-15-2014

Asa Wright Nature Centre tour with my children proved to be worthwhile. They spotted birds that the guide never saw before. However the highlight for my son was the sauntering out of this tiger striped lizard.

Here are some of the birds that we saw on the trail
Golden Headed Manakin

Potoos

White Bearded Manakin

Bearded Bellbird

Day 104 – 365 Days of Photography

4-14-2014

I spotted this yellow oriole in a tree today.  My husband and I, took a stroll in our neighborhood park.  I snapped the pond and several other things of interest.  However, since I saw this little birdie frolicking up in the trees, figured I would let you have a look as well.

Day 103 – 365 Days of Photography

4-13-2014

A day of relaxation on the beach.  I went down and just sat and basked in the sun at Vance River beach.  I figured it’s about time that I start back bringing the sand to you!  J

I cooked stew chicken with pigeon peas, sautéed vegetables in teriyaki and oyster sauce and mashed potatoes.  I brought the food along with me, beach moments make me hungry.  In addition we had a cooler filled with an assortment of refreshing drinks.

Sun, Sand and Sea!

A few extras

Day 102 – 365 Days of Photography

4-12-2014

The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party hosted by Saint Joseph’s Convent San Fernando's (Japanese Club), of which my daughter is a member.  The event was held at San Fernando hill, and the hill was closed off to the general public.  We parked at the bottom and were shuttled up to where the event was being held.

She dressed as the “White Rabbit”, or should I say her version of it.  I purchased yards of cloth and she confused her grandmother (my mother) into sewing her this outfit which she designed to wear to the event.  It was red, white and black, I wonder if by coincidence she managed to use the colors of our national flag. "Shrug"!

The event was a success.  Of the many activities, the one of note for me was a powder tossing game, which consisted of tossing colored (powdered paint) into the air.  The children wore masks over their nostrils and white t-shirts.  Needless to say the shirts were no longer white when they were done.

My daughter's school is an all girls school, however, invitations were extended to the male counterpart school (Presentation College, San Fernando).  They extended the invitation to us parents to partake in this particular event, and I must say I am happy that I didn't, your girl was wearing khaki and a khaki color linen top.........so not the business. LOL!

It was a fun day.

Some additional shots, some showcasing the beautiful view from atop this hill (San Fernando Hill)!

This rain drizzled hibiscus is my picture for today.  I posted this to my 500px.com/NorDeanCanvas page and forgot to post to Facebook and on 365project.org  Of all the pictures that I have taken and posted, this one seemed to be the most loved on 500px.  I hope you all love it too.

Day 100 – 365 Days of Photography

4-10-2014

After 100 days of photo taking, I can honestly say and see that I’ve learned many things and have many things yet to learn.  It’s indeed challenging keeping up with the project, but persevere I must.  Every comment and word of encouragement on facebook and the 365project has kept me going, and I trust that with God’s grace and guidance, I will see it through to completion.  To the followers of my blog, I know it's been different than my usual writing posts, and I appreciate you still following. I have reached yet but shy of 1/3 of the way.

My creative juices will really have to kick in for future subject, but the thought process is to improve the technique on the existing.  Here I bring to you some Purple Honey Creepers, they’re of the tanager family.  It’s raining here in Trinidad and these birds are enjoying playing and feeding under the blessing from the sky.

I appreciated each of you, to my fellow photographers – Keep snapping!  To my family and friends, thanks for cheering a girl on, I love all of you!

The island life should show case some beaches, don’t you think?  Well in an attempt to be different, here is a tree view of a beach.  This is Icacos, a beach on our South Western tip of the shoe (shape of Trinidad).

Day 98 – 365 Days of Photography

4-8-2014

Walkathon, can someone say out of shape.  My son’s school partnered with two other schools that share the same street with them and they hosted a health fair which began with a walkathon.  I am the school photographer, and running to the front of the line to the back numerous times trying to capture all was extremely tiring.  We were blessed with rain, at the very beginning, which seemed to be a passing cloud, until it came down again.  San Fernando is hilly, and they chose one of the hilliest routes.  My muscles got a good stretch to contraction ratio. Ha!
Here is one of the shots from today’s event.  Group of parents and some kids, bringing up the tail end, on High Street, San Fernando.

Day 97 – 365 Days of Photography

4-7-2014

Today consisted of running to the airport to see my friends off and doing a number of errands.  So I am providing a filler shot.  I took this shot at the Asa Wright Nature Centre yesterday.  Figured I would show you a natural swimming pool, they called it, “clear water pool”. There were a number of folks bathing in the pool, so I panned in to an area of emptiness.

Day 96 – 365 Days of Photography

4-6-2014

My friends asked that we take them to Asa Wright Nature Center.  They wanted to “rain forest” type experience.  When we got there, the last tour was leaving and only had room for four.  We sent them along and went to sit on the veranda and enjoy the hummingbirds that were speeding past our faces.  The guide said that over 17 species have been spotted here, mainly because they imported plants that has changed the variety of nectar offered and thus invited or attracted the hummers to the area.  Here I captured a White Necked Jacobin Hummingbird (aka Great Jacobin and Collared Hummingbird).

Day 95 – 365 Days of Photography

4-5-2014

You Old Goat you!   This goat answered to it’s name, came bolting when the owner called out……….DOHGLAH!   I thought it wanted to kiss me, it came straight up to the camera, and since I was down on the ground, the next thing available after the camera would’ve been my face. YUK!  “Ugly Duckling is appropriate for this goat, LOL!”
