Day 181 – 365 Days of Photography

Last week of school here in Trinidad and Tobago.  However, all end of term exams have finished.  Both of my children did not want to go off to school today, and apparently my husband felt he should be afforded the same luxury.  He asked what I had planned for the day, and he promptly dressed, saying he was heading to the mechanic.  Well we went our separate ways and then he started calling the phones of each child asking sneaking little questions about my camera and equipment.  I immediately knew what he was up too.  My birthday being July 2^nd, here comes the birthday gifts.

I accosted him with gift in hand upon his return and to my utmost pleasure, I now own something heavy duty enough to carry my SIGMA 150-500.

Hehe

Said ownership is upping my macro game too.  As this thing allows the camera to be flipped in the most precarious of angles.

Day 180 – 365 Days of Photography

To say I was tired from yesterday’s adventures is a complete understatement.  I was completely knackered.  My dear husband recognized and quickly came to the rescue, providing a hearty omelet breakfast and a scrumptious fried rice with baked fish and vegetables lunch.  Not to mention the massage on that wretched shoulder, that was completely sore, so much so that I even forgot of the thumping that my shin took, until I had to rub lotion over the spot.  Needless to say picture taking didn’t occur from my bed.  On top of all of that it rained none stop, so neither of us left the yard, well truth be told, I barely left the bed.  So here I bring you the kingbird that I took earlier this week at a neighboring park.

Day 179 – 365 Days of Photography

What a labour intense day.  We want to prepare our property to start building.  1^st we needed to clear a few trees to grant access to the land.  My husband and I, along with my brother, my kids and one of my cousins went there and proceeded to cut down the trees that was blocking access.  Unfortunately all said trees were fruit trees, a pommerac, two mango trees, and two plum trees.  Neighbors rushed to get the cut branches of the plum tree as it was laden with produce and thus the right time for replanting.

The rain showed no mercy, although maybe I should rethink that statement, as the rain was indeed welcome to wash away the torrent of ants that was biting us every step we took.  However, we were drenched to the bone, making it difficult to use power tools and thus had us right back to old fashioned swinging of the blade.   We walked with enough cutlasses for everyone and even my eleven year old son got in on the action.  Sleep is surely going to be welcomed tonight. 

With all going on, I ensured to make it more eventful by toppling over in the big drain and hurting my left shoulder as well as having a tree trunk hit my left shin.  Achy and swollen, it gets no better than this.  Here we see my son passing branches that he cut for my daughter to stack, and my husband preparing it into smaller pieces for my son to handle.  I was dragging the cut limbs to that location for them to carry on.

The bags of green mango that we came home with will be in tomorrows stew.

Yesterday’s tree trunk yield today’s harvest.  As I look up to the heavens the soft pillow of the clouds are duplicated in miniature taffetas of cotton, as if the heavens themselves reached down and placed them on the tips of dry branches for our delight.  Silky soft sinewy cotton, white, off white, set against the blue serenity of sky.

This tree trunk is of a ‘silk cotton tree’.  I had my bird shooting lens on, and probably should’ve taken out the point and shoot and captured the entire tree.  Bah hum bug, after thought.  The tree is huge, I took photos looking skyward at the produce of the tree as well.  My mother referred to this tree as a “barflo” tree (spelling unknown), she believes that the name she knows is of patois origin.  In her youthful days the cotton droppings from the tree were used to fill pillow sacks.

Local folklore has it that the tree is home to spirits and duppies, therefore local tree cutters were afraid of cutting these trees down thinking that in so doing, the spirits would be freed and allowed to roam the earth.

Well I had these bones in my plate from a promo that KFC is running for the world cup.  Honey BBQ wings purchase gets you a glass with a football player.  The glass we procured was “David Luiz”.  The wings however were sweet, spicy and good.  Oh and don’t forget my starch mango on the side, made for devouring.

Day 164 – 365 Days of Photography

Well my friend Kevin and I have been working on merging our photography.  Not that he needed me in any way, form or fashion, because he already has a lucrative photography presence on our small island.  However, we recognize that me being extremely personable gets approached way more than he does and can bring a different perspective to the photos.  We find our synergy to be excellent.  We’ve known each other since we were teenagers, both being in the same youth groups at church, and our jovial personalities are similar, meaning we have the same sense of humor.  We can jest and know that it is just that.   We’ve come up with a name for our collaboration and it’s K.O. Photography.  K-Kevin O-Odette but KO-Knock Out lol!  Kevin has created a wonderful logo for us and our photo shoot we did, we are finally ready to release the photos from it as a collaboration with this new logo.  I have been busy helping with the logo and processing of photos to slowly roll out and introduce our concept.  So I’ve not been snapping as I should have been.  I fear that as a result the only thing I can show are photos from the said shoot.

In all fairness, (since I post to multiple sites, including blog, 365project and facebook) to not give away which shots are mine from his, I will post the photos that I took of him taking her.
