Day 90 – 365 Days of Photography

3-31-2014

Meet Parker
A black Labrador Retriever, like our Jake.  The owner is European and imported his dog when he came to reside here in Trinidad.   There are no restrictions coming from the UK as they do not have rabies there.  Therefore his dog did not have to go through a quarantine period.  The quarantine period is what deterred us from bringing Jake back.  We miss our black lab so much though.  I spoke to the friends that we left him with and they will look into sending him to us.

Day 89 – 365 Days of Photography

3-30-2014

Queens Park Savannah, Port of Spain.

My husband wanted to go scrimmage with his childhood mates, at his old stomping ground, known as the savannah.  I embraced the opportunity to take some shots in and around.  Here are some homes on the hill overlooking the Savannah.  The female at the bottom was flying a kite.  At this point the kite fell to the ground.  The place was windy.  I am standing facing North, you can see the western light from the setting sun on the left sides of the homes.  Queens Royal College is South West of me.  I will bring you some more shots of around the savannah, in the ensuing days.

Good friends, brothers, “pardnahs”!  My husband Kert and his buddy Kirk, this gentleman befriended us when we moved to Douglasville, GA and he has been our friend ever since.  He is here visiting in Trinidad and I embraced the opportunity to capture them both, just before we left to meet up with some other friends at a local watering hole.

Day 85 - 365 Days of Photography

3-26-2014

Sitting at the home of my God Parents this morning, on the veranda, just enjoying the surroundings and the quiet serenity that even city life can offer.   My God-father has planted several pigeon pea trees and they’ve grown to where the branches are taller than the fence.  He has made feeders out of chicken wire in which he places, bread and/or fruits to lure the birds.  Today there were an assortment of “Tanagers” – Blue, Gray and Green.  I also saw Yellow Orioles and several Kisskedees.  There is a gated fence separating his yard from his next door neighbor’s and they go back and forth between the yards, enjoying the spoils of each other’s gardens.  Good neighborly living.  The mangoes are green and high on the tree, before long they will ripen and fall.  They are a grafted mango, very big juicy and sweet.  My palette almost cannot wait for the absolute delight to come.

Of the Tanagers I saw, I present to you the "Palm Tanager".

Palm Tanager (Thraupis palmarum) is a medium-sized passerine bird, also referred to in Trinidad as the “Green Jean” and “Palmiste”.  In fact we have a suburb in San Fernando named after this bird.  Palm Tanagers are social, restless but unwary birds which eat a wide variety of small fruit.  They also regularly eat some nectar and insects, including caterpillars.

Day 84 – 365 Days of Photography

3-25-2014

Curry Crab and dumplings – Tobago style.  My dad was born and raised in Scarborough Tobago, in an area referred to as Calder Hall.  He told us many stories of his upbringing, his youthful days were trying and enjoyable at the same time.  He was the first of eight children.  One of the joys of having a parent from the sister isle, was that every long weekend, holiday or chance, we flew over to visit with my grandma and enjoy the foods of Tobago.   This local dish aforementioned is made differently here.  The curry is more of a curry stew, and the dumplings are typically of corn or cassava, although the commercially sold dumpling consists primarily of flour.  My father being the oldest was also one of the first to marry, making my mother a favorite sister-in-law, and so said, she quickly learned how to make many dishes the Tobagonian way.  This is one of them, oh gosh her hand is sweet with the crab, from seasoning to cooking.   I saw blue crab today in the market, and began salivating at the prospect of the pot that would surely ensue.

Yum!

p.s.  These crabs are tied as they are alive. Crabs are sold alive because they have internal enzymes that cause their flesh to break down once they die.  If this process starts before the meat is cooked, the meat can become non-edible and potentially poisonous.

Day 82 – 365 Days of Photography

3-23-2014

One of the downfalls of third world living is that first world inventions are often not readily available and if they are, the price range is often outside my comfort zone.  That being said, I wanted to experiment with some still images and a high contrast shot.  I decided to build a light box.  I got a box and box knife and attacked it, taped up the inside with white paper, tissue papered three sides and proceeded to light it.  I didn’t have the lamps to get the lighting that I really wanted.  A trip to the hardware store would be in my future for sure.  I came up with lighting these two little vases, using what make shift torches and lights we had and thought it came out ok.  This was after several attempts.

Day 81 – 365 Days of Photography

3-22-2014

I’ve been back to the islands a little over a year, not without the torment of missing friends.  My adult life was spent making new friends, and missing them is a part of the course of moving.  What joy it is to know that one of those friends is here visiting and my family gets to see him.  He too is excited and is rummaging through his own camera, showing us pictures of places and people he captured on his visit.

We plan to meet again before his return home far far away.  I am sure I will capture more the next time we see each other.

A few other shots.

Day 80 – 365 Days of Photography

3-21-2014

Every now and then, I like taking pictures of the ordinary and processing it to the other end of the spectrum.  This was one of those days.  I was sitting at the light in traffic and I envisioned this to look just how I processed it. J Took some finagling, but I got it where I want it, and walla!  Hope you like!

Day 79 – 365 Days of Photography

3-20-2014

On a weekday morning, if my Son is the first to be ready, he is never a happy camper.  “Why is everyone taking so long?”  He groans and moans and gets anxious, constantly looking at his time piece.  Well this morning was like any other, he was the first to be ready and this is his facial expression.  I called his name, he looked up, and there…………captured!

I then begged him to smile, and after much probing, he let one slip.

Day 77 – 365 Days of Photography

3-18-2014

Today is actually 3-19-2014.  I didn’t shoot yesterday.  Today, my daughter has a day off from school, and I managed to talk her into a photo shoot.  She is 15 and the promise of wearing “Mom’s” makeup, heals, jewelry and clothing was enough to twist her arm into it, after all, all little girls love playing dress up.  I outfitted her, made her up and we went downstairs to setup.  I also did a few shots via tripod and remote of me in there, which I will showcase today (3-19-2014) as well.

I am pleased with the outcome, so I am showing a number of our different poses below.

Day 76 – 365 Days of Photography

3-17-2014

So once again I bring you the ground dove.   I placed some food to attract the birds at the top of the concrete posts.  Well attract I surely did, I sat there for hours, chirp chirp, keek keek keek, tweet tweet, worrrr worrr worrr worrr.  They came, all different types resting on the electricity wires up top observing.  The only one brave enough to come down to the wall itself was the ground dove.

Not only did it come down, but it perched and posed and ruffled up its tail feathers for me.

Well I got hungry, so I went in to get something to eat.  Ah ha, now that’s why scarecrows work.  When I came back out to retrieve my phone that I had forgotten on my front porch, the bird food was gone.  As soon as I moved the swooped down and ate their tummies full.  I will have to plan differently next time.  Looks like I need to place the food and go lay down on the ground below the curtain.

Enjoy these shots.  Showing all of them on my blog.

Day 75 – 365 Days of Photography

3-16-2014

Happy birthday to my Mom!
Jubilant smile after receiving her blessings at church.

Today in reflection, I think of what the loss of my dad and brother taught me.  It’s to cherish those still here with us on this earth.  I cherish my mother, my family near and extended and I cherish my friends.  God bless!

Silhouette
I wanted to toy with this side profile and back light it, thus casting shadow on the image.  I toyed with the processing to darken my subject even more to get the effect that I wanted.  This is my daughter.

p.s. When I went to upload this image my computer crashed.  I spent last night and this morning trouble shooting, glad that it’s back up and running.  I had to pull the memory “SMH”.

Day 73 – 365 Days of Photography

3-14-2014

A few shots around the Dam!

A dam is a barrier that impounds water or underground streams. Dams generally serve the primary purpose of retaining water, while other structures such as floodgates or levees (also known as dikes) are used to manage or prevent water flow into specific land regions. Hydropower and pumped-storage hydroelectricity are often used in conjunction with dams to generate electricity. A dam can also be used to collect water or for storage of water which can be evenly distributed between locations - Wikipedia

The dams that I was exposed to while living in the states were void of fauna except on the outskirts.  I was amazed to see the growth in the dam here and to hear of the prey that lived in the water.  After all this was supposed to be drinking water for the neighborhood.  In the midst of it all, there is beauty still to be seen.

Day 72 – 365 Days of Photography

3-13-2014

Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis) is a wader in the order Charadrilformes.  It is the only crested wader in South America. The upperparts are mainly brownish grey, with a bronze glossing on the shoulders.  The head is particularly striking, mainly grey with a black forehead and throat patch extending onto the black breast. A white border separates the black of the face from the grey of the head and crest.  The rest of the underparts are white, and the eye ring, legs and most of the bill are pink.  The rump is white and the tail black. It’s call is loud and harsh.

These are some other shots of same birds, that highlight the colors and personality described above.  I chose the above image because of clarity in focus.  The last image would've been best if it were clearer.

Nelumbo Lutea (Also known as American Lotus, Yellow Lotus, Water-chinquapin, volee’ and shower flower) Part 3

Third phase of the Nelumbo Lutea, and in this picture, you can see where the name ‘Shower Flower’ came from.  It shows the inner parts shaped like a shower head, in bokeh background, you can see remnants of the dried version as the stem that has now withered and broken, having the ‘shower like head’ bent downwards.  These flowers are used in wedding cake decorations.
