Day 134 – 365 Days of Photography

5-14-2014

Other photographers can be so inspiring.  Today’s shot was inspired by my photographer friend Kevin, who is doing the 365 project with me.  He posts to the facebook 365 page that we created.  He was expressing his love of macro photography and whilst talking to him, I thought of capturing this.

In this case a money macro – the twenty (20) dollar bill of Trinidad and Tobago.  The bills of Trinidad and Tobago are different by color.  $1 – red, $5 – green, $10 – gray, $20 – purple and $100 – blue.  The hundred dollar bill is fondly called a ‘blue note’ by nationals.  In choosing a bill, I noticed that each bill depicted a different bird and on the flip side had some cultural representation of our twin isle.  I chose the $20 for its depiction of the steel pan.  I also did a few macro shots of the bird, and in the $20 case, it’s one of the hummingbirds, as Trinidad and Tobago is known as ‘the islands of the hummingbirds’.

Day 133 – 365 Days of Photography

5-13-2014

In this photograph is the flower of the ‘Giant Granadilla’ aka ‘Barbadine”.  The fruit makes a delicious drink, and ice-cream, however, the leaves are brewed in a tea and is used for high blood pressure and or diabetes.

The flower is scented, and shown here, it is in its pre-opening state.  I took this photography at my brother’s home.  I also brought a barbadine home, which will soon end up either in a mug or the ice-cream maker.

Day 132 – 365 Days of Photography

5-12-2014

The date was 5/12/2003. The place was Northside Hospital Women’s Services.  The time was approximately 11:30pm.  On that date, at that place, around that time, I was groggy, tired, spent, because I had just delivered a baby boy of 7lbs 13ounces.  Now he is more than 100 pounds heavier and 11.  Time surely flies.  We are to cherish every moment.  My children are my pride and joy.  I’ve showcased my soon to be 16 year old daughter before and thought it only fitting that my son got a photo shoot all of his own.  His choice today – no school.  He wanted to stay home relax and later have pizza, cake and ice cream with the family (god parents included at least those that reside in Trinidad).  He is an “A” student, so we figured, hey, why not.   While I was checking my flash, I caught him trying to look at his tongue, which when he heard the shutter released produced much giggling.  These are most of his natural expressions, which I am glad got captured.  He is the typical, loving but rambunctious little boy.

Day 131 – 365 Days of Photography

5-11-2014

Today is mother’s day here in Trinidad and Tobago and in honor of my mother, this is a throwback picture that I saved for this day, taken earlier this week from the veranda of one of the homes she grew up in.  Location Fullerton, Cedros.  As a child I visited many a family member here and have fond memories of interaction with all my cousins, aunts and uncles.  My mother has 16 siblings, two of which are from her dad solely, but the other 14 are from her mother.  My mother spent her youthful days in Fullerton Village of Cedros, Biche and St. Joseph Maracas.  After marrying and having her first child she moved from Cedros to Point Fortin.  I am happy that I am blessed enough to still have my mother here on earth with me.  With me she is, as I also have her residing with me.  As a child you don’t always agree with your parents, and as a parent, I don’t always agree with my children, but love her, I do, as I too do love my children.  I appreciate her for who she is and what she has sacrificed for the goodness of our family.  She is the pillar of our family structure and I salute her today and always…

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mom’s, God’s richest blessings upon you always!

Day 130 – 365 Days of Photography

5-10-2014

Have you ever heard the Tropical Mockingbird whistle?  They release a harsh, low pitched ‘chi’ or ‘che’, combining to form a mix of rich and fruity churr, cherp and whistled notes.  These birds I saw in a residential part of San Fernando.  They’ve populated the place and together with an array of tanagers fight for the supply of mango, banana or whatever local fruit is in season.  When they come around the tanagers bolt, as they are slightly bigger and dominating.  I enjoyed sitting and watching them at work, often times they came in twos and flew, one chasing the other, as if they were playing catch.  They swooped at the last moment, always appearing to have missed crashing into an obstacle by the mere fraction of an inch.  My son was quite taken by them, he too was sitting equipped with camera.  He got some nice shots of all of the birds.

I also wanted to see how the bird would look in a black and white rendition.
