Have you ever heard the
Tropical Mockingbird whistle? They
release a harsh, low pitched ‘chi’ or ‘che’, combining to form a mix of rich
and fruity churr, cherp and whistled notes.
These birds I saw in a residential part of San Fernando. They’ve populated the place and together with
an array of tanagers fight for the supply of mango, banana or whatever local
fruit is in season. When they come
around the tanagers bolt, as they are slightly bigger and dominating. I enjoyed sitting and watching them at work,
often times they came in twos and flew, one chasing the other, as if they were playing
catch. They swooped at the last moment,
always appearing to have missed crashing into an obstacle by the mere fraction
of an inch. My son was quite taken by
them, he too was sitting equipped with camera.
He got some nice shots of all of the birds.
I also wanted to see how the bird would look in a black and white rendition.
