This tree trunk is of a ‘silk
cotton tree’. I had my bird shooting
lens on, and probably should’ve taken out the point and shoot and captured the
entire tree. Bah hum bug, after thought. The tree is huge, I took photos looking
skyward at the produce of the tree as well.
My mother referred to this tree as a “barflo” tree (spelling unknown),
she believes that the name she knows is of patois origin. In her youthful days the cotton droppings
from the tree were used to fill pillow sacks.
Local folklore has it that
the tree is home to spirits and duppies, therefore local tree cutters were
afraid of cutting these trees down thinking that in so doing, the spirits would
be freed and allowed to roam the earth.
