Nelumbo Lutea

Is a species of flowering plants in the monotypic family Nelumbonaceae.  Also known as American Lotus, Yellow Lotus, Water-chinquapin, volee’ and shower flower.  This is an emergent aquatic plant, and it grows in lakes and swamps, as well as areas prone to flooding.  The roots are anchored in the mud, but the leaves and flowers emerge above the water’s surface.  The seed of this plant is edible and is known as “alligator corn”. 

I was warned to not go close to the water because several caiman had been seen lurking around.

Bougainvilleas

Bougainvillea is a genus of thorny ornamental vines, bushes, and trees with flower-like spring leaves near its flowers.  The actual flower of the plant is small and generally white, but each cluster of three flowers is surrounded by three or six bracts with the bright colors associated with the plants, including pink, magenta, purple, red, orange, white or yellow.  These bracts look to like they were constructed out of kite paper. 

This appears to be blooming season as everywhere you go all over the island, you’re sure to get a glimpse of the colorful bracts in bloom.

Day 67 – 365 Days of Photography

This is a filler photo, as I didn’t get out shooting today.  The day proved to be a hectic one. 

Here is a previously taken shot from this week when I went down to Icacos.  Here’s my husband and cousin standing on the beach, not paying attention to anything at all, not noticing that I captured them.   They’re busy eating “fat pork” (Chrysobalanus icaco, the cocoplum, Paradise Plum and icaco), a local fruit that grows off of a shrub like tree that grows in sand, or on beaches.

They’re standing enjoying the sea breeze, patiently waiting for me to do what I do!

Day 66 – 365 Days of Photography

Today my cousin came home with a box full of flowers in vases.  Tomorrow is “International Women’s Day” and she brought flowers for all the females in the household, her mom and her female friends.   Since I had not yet taken an image, I decided to take this.  Oh Happy Day!

I was told that a crushed aspirin in the water would preserve the life of the flowers.  Who knew?

Day 65 – 365 Days of Photography

Speedlight or external flash, time for some experimentation.  It came in the mail today so what better subject to capture than one of my favorite people.  My Mother!  Here she is sitting on the couch enjoying a morning of the tube.  She says the flash almost blinded her.   LOL!

I hope I inherit the lack of wrinkles that she displays in her late 70s, looking so good.  I've seen photos posted of folks younger than her that look lots older. Good gene pool.
